Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment for children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, OCD, or related difficulties.
Rather than requiring the child to participate directly in therapy, SPACE works with parents and caregivers to identify ways anxiety has begun shaping family life.
Parents learn how to respond supportively to their child’s distress while gradually reducing family accommodation—the changes families understandably make to routines, expectations, or behaviors to help a child avoid or manage anxiety.
Treatment focuses on helping parents communicate confidence in their child’s ability to cope with difficult emotions, establish thoughtful boundaries around anxiety-driven behaviors, and make gradual changes that support greater independence.
Providing therapeutic guidance to parents of anxious children.
SPACE may be especially helpful when a child is reluctant to participate in therapy, when anxiety or OCD significantly affects the entire family, or when parents feel stuck between wanting to provide reassurance and wanting to encourage their child to face fears.
SPACE can help parents:
Understand how anxiety and OCD affect family patterns
Reduce reassurance and other forms of accommodation
Respond to distress with both empathy and confidence
Support greater independence and tolerance of uncertainty
Develop a coordinated plan for responding to anxiety-driven behaviors
The goal isn't to eliminate your child's anxiety or force them into uncomfortable situations.
Instead, SPACE helps parents change how the family responds to anxiety—creating an environment that communicates: “I understand this is hard, and I believe you can handle it.” an
